About the Y-Stars
About 15 years ago, a small group of parents/caregivers of children with Down syndrome started a dance class as a form of movement therapy for their children and adopted the name, Y-Stars (the name was selected from a list of proposed names by the children). The group has since grown to 21 young adults, 19 of whom have Down syndrome and 2 have other learning challenges. The 21 Y-Stars are between the ages of 13 to 42. The current arts program has expanded from dance classes to include art and drama classes. These programs aim to provide our young adults some form of enrichment activities during the weekends where they can meet and build friendships just like any other person. Visual art opens up the opportunity for our Y-Stars to enjoy and express in visual art, it also enhances their fine motor skills and focus. The art project aims to create a source of extra income for people with special needs. Not only will they enjoy the pleasure of visual arts, the extra income and appreciation of their art pieces will be a boost for their confidence and provide a sense of achievement.
